Whether re-building a three-story glass lake house with his father (first one was stone-proof, but not fireproof), checking hockey opponents, or advising technology companies at some of their most critical junctures, Michael believes that hard work and determination are the most effective tools in just about every situation.
Having dedicated the entirety of his career thus far to working with technology companies, Michael’s passion lies in helping management teams win. Michael spends the majority of his time with companies in the Enterprise Software and FinTech verticals. He launched Canaan’s FinTech Central in 2015, a quarterly event series that brings together entrepreneurs, investors and press from across the space. He is a board observer with Bellhops, Rocketrip, Arbor, Tubular Labs and Emissary.
Prior to joining Canaan in 2014, Michael was with GCA Savvian advising technology companies on M&A and capital raising initiatives. Michael advised companies across the broader technology ecosystem, but spent a majority of his time in Enterprise Software. He advised companies such as TOA Technologies, Violin Memory and SpinMedia on their capital raises, and also TOA Technologies (Oracle), Keynote Systems (Thoma Bravo), Vitrue (Oracle) and LogLogic (Tibco) through their acquisition processes. Having advised founders at the tail end of their company’s lifecycles, Michael feels strongly that the fundraising decisions made at the early stage are by far the most important.
Michael holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley where he was the President of the Ice Hockey Team, a Committee Chair for Delta Upsilon Fraternity and a Member of the Asian Business Association. Michael is Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for U.C. Berkeley Alumni of New York, a Junior Council Member at the American Museum of Natural History and a Mentor for high school students with Minds Matter.
